Limit the plasma cutter's displacement
« on: Mar 27, 2023, 18:10:35 PM »
Hi all,
Is there a way of limiting the displacement of the head when going from one part to the other in the sheet?
I have this head going all over the place. Especially when the sheet is almost full, it comes back to fill the holes before finishing.
Why not just cutting the part next nearest to the last?
What manages That? And how to prevent it?
Thanks a lot for your help,

I'm not positive on this, but I believe you want file>setup> installed machines > flatbed> select your table>setup>NC settings>Part ordering>shortest path

Thanks Jona,
After you pointed these options, I've tried all of them and they all give different path for the tool, but each one of them is random.
Even the "Left" "right" options go around the sheet.
I'll keep looking.

The first one in the above 3 doesn't look that bad to me.  Yes, the path seems to be all over the place but it is picking up the next part right where the last part stopped in multiple locations.  Realistically, that travel path is shorter than when it cuts around all the parts.

I know... That's the one "I" would pick hands on.
...but, things being what they are, the operator wants to have the labels ordered from left to right on the sheet, so he could stick them on without looking at them and assume everything is fine.
Even though he has the Nest label with the tool path, the item number and sequence printed on it.

Ah, that makes sense.  I am literally just getting into the CAM side (had 2nd day of class today).  Been interesting to get a peak behind the curtain.

Along with the setup>installed machine changes you've looked at, maybe changing the nesting method would also help achieve what your operator is looking for?

I don't know that he'll ever be able to do that. As far as I can tell there will always be misaligned parts due to different shapes and sizes that will require the operator to pay attention and not be on autopilot.

I found this and set it to Keep Current Nest Part order. It did not work as described.

*EDIT* - The nesting was about 25% out of order but when the NC was written the cut order was modified and was 100% left to right on the job I just tested.

https://help.autodesk.com/view/FABRICATION/ENU/?guid=GUID-4933503A-52B9-4926-AE50-5CFC938D0225

"Keep Current Nest Part Order: If enabled, the NC writer will not change the cut order.

Part Ordering: This option determines the order in which the parts will be cut. If the Keep Current Nest Part Order option is enabled, this option will not be available. Setting this option will ensure that the machine torch will not move back towards the already cut section of the sheet. Therefore cut parts can be taken off the table before the machine has finished. The methods that can be selected are Label Application (i.e. keep the same cutting order as printed with the part labels), Allow Heat Dissipation and Shortest Path (where the controller will make the decisions based on its own internal settings)."

Thank you Jona
I managed to make it work with the settings attached.
Not sure how different it is from yours, but it seems to work consistently.
No more returning to the start of the sheet to burn the last few pieces.
