Update ITM definition in Revit
« on: Jun 14, 2023, 12:11:04 PM »
I changed some dimensions on a part and can't get anything to update. Does Revit have a way to update the definition of our ITMs?  In CAD this seemed to not be an issue..

Unfortunately I don't think so. We haven't found anything, anyway. So far we've been forced to manually swap out parts if something in the .itm changes. I'm kind of waiting for someone to get around to making a Dynamo script for it.

Anything changed in the database and reloaded into Revit is only applied to the newly placed itm's. All existing itm's retain whatever information and settings at the time it was placed. Its a blessing and a curse.

Try versioning the .itm and reload configuration. Check existing parts for change.

Replacing any CID with the same CID should be fairly straight forward, though not trivial. ITM location, orientation, dimensions, connectors, tags, numbers, assembly membership, even existing schedules can be maintained during the swap. If the replacement ITM has significant geometry changes however, there will still be some manual clean up, not that this is a problem specific to Revit. It's still far better than the alternative if we're talking about dozens or even hundreds of ITM.

It's a good idea. I will look into it.

Forgot to say this worked.  Thanks.

I have stopped versioning ITMs for Revit.
I once had a Config that just refused to reload and it came down to a single pipe ITM I had versioned. I only added 2 smaller sizes to the product list.
I retrieved the ITM from a backup, added the sizes without versioning and it reloaded.
This may sound trivial but it took many days of testing to pin it down.
I will find the thread and move it to top.

Thanks.  I knew there was an issue with versioning but thought it was isolated to the things like connectors.  I will not use this method unless for extreme reasons.

Since reading about this versioning technique we've applied it with great success. Per your earlier posts, it appears to just not work for 2041 pattern pipe, and, say, fitting-to-fitting connections, but otherwise it's been a great help. Thanks!
