Navis loading all files
« on: Jul 19, 2010, 22:05:08 PM »
I have an nwf file that seems to reload all the drawing files regardless if they have been changed or not.  I also have an issue of the background loading jpg's.  I am not sure about that one.  I thought I had set global options to what I needed but I am finding that there is something I am missing.  Any ideas on this?

Yes, I have one.  I have peers that disagree, but they're WRONG and I'm right so listen up and you too shall enjoy faster loads on a daily basis.

Build your NWF files from NWC's only.  You can't force Navis to ONLY load the single file that has changed, but I bet you're a lot like me, and you end up refreshing Navisworks multiple times in a day.  If you build it with NWC files, the load time is SIGNIFICANTLY reduced.  Dont take my word for it, rebuild a new NWF with the same files you currently have on your project and see for yourself.

The 1 downside to this, is that you will forget to re-write your NWC's when you make a change to your DWG.  You could rewrite your Autocad SAVE command to automatically write a NWC as well, or you could just get used to typing NWCOUT (I have a alias of just NWC)... perhaps a button.

Regardless, over the life of any decent sized project, you'll save yourself a great deal of time (and others) if you take my advice.  I've been using Navisworks since 2003, and this has been a persistent problem since the beginning (well, my beginning).

The problem that we have is that a lot of the subcontractors we work with don't have Navisworks. They simply use the Freedom Viewer. So we get dwg files from them and then we not only have to NWC out our files but all of the subcontractors also. This gets to be just as time consuming as waiting for the dwg to reload!. Just my opinion though.

I wish they would implement the same conversion when loading a dwg as the export modules.Don't understand why not.

I have used dwg files in my nwf files and until this 2011 realease I have had no issues with it reloading just the file that has changed.  If I can't figure it out I will try what you said.  I just like the dwgs because I can refresh changes I have made and I can look at it right away without having to rewrite an nwc.  Thanks for the input.

Well I search the Augi forums and this is a problem. Here's a quote and explains why sometimes it happens and not happens

We are having this same problem, I started a thread about it earlier today. NW only reads the cache files for me properly when nobody else is accessing the model. When others are using it all the dwgs get translated for every refresh.... killing me

I think we may have figured it out.  One of the files had a couple files attached to it instead of overlay.  It is set up to ignore Xrefs but I think that may have had something to do with it.  We are using NWC files for the structure and background files so the refresh is faster even if it does load all the working files we have.  It did only refresh my file when I was the only one who saved.  An improvement from what was happening before.  Thanks.

you should seriously think about sending ALL of your Subs a copy of this free utility and having them create their own NWC files.  :D

I know this is an old thread, but I'm having this same problem with Navis '24.

It loads ALL files on every refresh instead of just the files that have changed. It takes forever to refresh the model and I refresh the model probably 20-30 times daily. This did not happen in any previous versions I've used..('14-'23)

Has anyone else run into this problem recently? I've seen a thread on the Autodesk Community about in '24 but no solution yet.

I was told "September 2023" is the target for update 1 to Navisworks Manage. Also that the issue is known and specifically related to .dwg files.
