update database in Revit

(1/1)

Alina:
Hi,
I made a plumbing design in Revit 2017. Now I have Revit 2018 and I have created new database and removed old one (file that was created in 2017 was using that old database). Trying to figure out if there is a way to update database in 2017 file because now I cannot do anything in there...See screenshot
Thanks

Why did you create a new database? Your Fabrication database is relevant from year to year and does not need upgrading like traditional families do. Placing a year designation on the file only confuses users and makes them think its version dependent. This is why ASTI puts our database in a neutral location that is not marked by the year. Each new install of Fabrication gets mapped to same database.

Darren Young:
Need the original database. Revit doesn't let you switch like CADmep does.   Why did you create a new one?

Once you have a DB, it shouldn't ever be thrown out...it stays even when you update software.

The only real reason to throw out a DB and start a new one is if the old one bad.

How closely do the 2 align? Are the ITM's named/organized the same? Fittings the same?  IF the DB's are not closely aligned, there are some very poor, time consuming options that will likely take longer than just redrawing.

Alina:
Thank you guys, I got it. I am just exploring/learning, now I will keep that in mind

Darren Young:
Good questions to ask and try. Most folks don't put enough thought into hour DB admin needs/should be different in a Revit world vs CADmep.

Example:
If I rename an ITM in my database, a CAD drawing that already uses it won't be mapped to it (important if it's product listed). Using a COD Script or the VIPS comand it's easy to remap them.

When that same thing happens in Revit, how does it get fixed?  There is no COD scripting there. No VIPS command. How does reloading the DB affect that orphaned item?  Disappears? Still there as an orphaned object? How do you update it?

These are the types of questions anyone going to Revit should consider.
